The Winds of Change

John Taylor 2/4/96

The winds of change
Won't blow away desire.
It's been years, and you're still here -
I still miss you all the time;
The candle still burns strong
Change can't put out that fire.
Tell me, how can I love you still
When the best was left behind?
Oh, the wind can't blow what's rooted fast -
Your memory fades, but the dream dies last,
And if I tell the truth,
Guess I'm wanting it that way...
Cause what we had
Was so much more exciting -
This hollow safety I live now
Just can't compare with yesterday.
But I've no choice
It's you who wasn't happy.
If the wind won't blow me peace,
Maybe she'll blow you back one day.
Oh, the wind can't blow what's rooted fast -
Your memory fades, but the dream dies last,
And if I tell the truth,
Guess I'm wanting it that way...
If I tell the truth,
I'd rather live in yesterday,

When the wind blew you
Into my waiting arms
We made love all night long
And dreamed of things to come.
Then you were young
And I was so much bolder,
And far too stubborn yet
To decry what we'd become.
Is it too much to ask?
Am I a fool to still be waiting
For the day you findally find
It's me who's loved you all along?
Oh, desire's strange
And there's no method or explaining
How or why the wind will blow
Leaving one heart there behind...
